At the outset an engineer builder of bridges and railroads, Gabriel Popescu finds in Paris an imense art, that will make him a plastic artist, who shows all the qualities of the great engravors: synthesis spirit, energy, a great vitality and force to express his emotive states through lines, tones, form, composition.
His participations to exhibits opened in Paris (The show-room from Paris – with the engraving “Martha Canazin's Portrait”), to the universal international exhibition in 1990 with three engravings: “The Top With Longing”, “Tezeu Leaving Ariadna”, “Falguiere's Bust”, to the romanian art exhibition in Bucharest (1927, 1931), to exhibitions in Haga and Brussels (1930) reveal a lifetime dedicated to art. The entire artistic and pedagogic activity of Gabriel Popescu is well illustrated by the exhibits found in the museum from Vulcana Pandele. The house-atelier “Gabriel Popescu”, opened for visitors in 1970, presents informations about the engraver's life and activity, exhibiting personal belongings, the library and some tools that the gravor used to create engravings.
His works are rendered using “engineering thin, precise lines”; he “models the coal with his finger or spreads it out roughly”. The exhibition is, at the same time, a memorial house, an engraving atelier, but also a plastic art museum, an oasis of light, talent, tranquillity, inner artistic kneading, all these bearing a single name – creator genius.
