Static nature is a genre in which Petrascu was more involved, because this genre allowed him to master the matter. The only trick was to integrate this matter in substantial shapes and to imprint to it a chromatic equilibrium that should transpose the dead object into the animated world of art.
Therefore he created the “interiors” genre, a big succes cycle in which he rendered corners of his atelier, using some motives all the time: the popular rug (basarabean), the big window with squares, the couch with many pillows and one wall covered with paintings at a time.
The painter catches the atmosphere in his atelier just as it is, without embellishing it.
The artist was influenced by Grigorescu, as one can see by looking at “Sunset on Siret” and “Venice”, but he will detach himself from any influences, creating a personal style in which chromatic alchemy is the main element.
