Matei Basarab

The “Matei Basarab – 350” exhibit is occasioned by the commemoration of the great waivode death, who died on april 9-th, 1654, in the princely houses in Targoviste. The opening of this exhibit in the former capital of Tara Romaneasca is justed by the important rol played by the town starting with the year 1640, when it becames again the main princely residence. The documents emitted by the princely chancellary testify an economic-social and cultural development without precedent, which determines the traveler Paul de Alep to consider Targoviste similar to Alep and Damasc.

Imperial doors - Costestii de Vale

The exhibit tries to transpose over centuries the cultural and spiritual values of the muntenian society when Matei Basarab was the ruler. As a praise brought to the efforts of transmitting direct testimonies to the descendants, we present, as a striking aspect, religious art masterpieces from the patrimony of some cult bezels in Dambovita County. We bring to mind the imperial doors accommodated by the Sf. Gheorghe church in Costestii de Vale, autochthonous creation of an exceptional value. Some icons from Sarindar monastery in Bucharest are also presented to the public, being at the present time in the patrimony of Sf. Haralambie church, in Frasin. Made by a greek atelier in the middle of the XVI-th century, these icons stand out because of a thorough technique for reproducing iconographic scenes. Matei Basarab and lady Elina were also known for their interest in providing monasteries with holy objects, like the cross for Holy Table, given to Dealu monastery, or an imperial icon for Sf. Nicolae Andronesti church.

For the art and the culture of Tara Romaneasca, the epoch of Matei Basarab will be the base for the crystallization and then the flowering of the first national style, called Brancoveanu style.
The documents emitted by the princely chancellary, as well as the private ones, bring forward various aspects of the social and economic life: the running of the peasants from the taxes and the harassment of the villages, the rural colonization, the increase in the commerce volume, towns importance as places for goods selling and storage, trade commerce tools – the usury, the gage -, granting immunities to boyars, but especially to monasteries.
Coins, the XVII-th century
The large number of traders who operated in the town and the dimension of the done deals are confirmed by the discovered monetary thesauruses, most of which having in composition pieces with large nominal (the money thesaurus discovered in 1962 in the german church's shrine, as well as the one in Vladeni, Dambovita County).
The ceramic material is well represented as well, considering the digging campaigns started in the sixties. We present a “cahla” - a plate dated 1640-1646, decorated in relief with a rider wearing a westerner costume.

Ornaments

A difficult task was selecting the most representative ornament objects, considering the quantity of the findings, but also the artistic value. We notice the predominant presence of seal rings, certainly due to their functional role.

The theme intercession is emphasized, aesthetic and functional, by rearranging the exposition space, according to actual principles of the cultural patrimony's preservation and valorization.

We hope that by means of this exhibit we managed to compress the time, bringing again in public conscience the image of a ruler who created an epoch.
