1895
On the 5th of November came into the world in the village Pestisani, Gureni vill from Gorj
county, the baby Vasile - the eighth son of the couple Maria and Constantin Blendea, farmers
"mosneni" (free peasants from the Romanian Coutry).
1903-1908
He graduated the primary school following the classes of the neighboring schools, Borosteni and
Francesti; he proves a precocious drawing skill, initiated by his elder brother, the teacher
Tanasie Blendea.
1908-1913
He takes the classes of the gymnasium school "Tudor Vladimirescu" from Targu-Jiu, possessed by
the same passion for drawing.
1913-1916
He finishes the high course of the Normal School from Turnu-Severin, being now a well-known
designer.
1916-1918
He begins his active service in the 18th infantry Regiment Gorj, from where is recruted for the
Military school of Botosani; sent afterwards to the front, the reservist sub-lieutenent Blendea
Vasile takes active part in the battles of Marasti, Valea Putnei, Valea Susitei and Muncelu.
1918-1920
He was bound apprentice for a while to the "thin" painters, familiarizing himself with the wall painting
on the occasion of the Hobita church's painting (Pestisani-Gorj) where Constantin Brancusi was borned;
hired later by the sculptor Emil Beker from Bucharest, Vasile Blendea creates for him various
ornaments.
1920-1924
Turned into a student of the Beaux-Arts School from Bucharest and observed by the school principal,
the painter George Demetrescu Mirea, Vasile Blendea takes at the same time sculpture courses with
Dimitrie Paciurea and monumental painting courses with Costin Petrescu, having Frederich Storck as
his drawing teacher; he completes under the guidance of Dimitrie Paciurea the work "Beautiful
Prince", awarded at the graduates' display with the prize "Horia Boamba" of the Beaux-Arts Union;
he was hired in autumn as a drawing teacher in Focsani.
1925
He makes his entrance at the Official Salon, exhibiting Professor Ghilerdea' bust; six
successive years - between 1925 and 1930 - takes part at the Official Salon with sculpture
and painting work.
1925-1926
He moves to Targoviste, at the Normal School; the teaching gives him enough time to colaborate with
the painter Dumitru Belisare; in the climate of the patriarchal Targoviste, Vasile Blendea engages
himself to rehabilitate some medieval frescos, he works on compositions, makes statuary groups of
allegorical character, among whom we mention "The Pyramid of Sacrifice", moulds busts and sketches
portraits in charcoal.
1927-1930
In the autumn of 1927 wins by competition a scholarship in Paris, becoming a member of the
romanian school from Fontenay-aux-Roses; here Vasile Blendea successfully takes part in "Salon des
artistes français"; the journals "Les artistes d'aujourd'hui" and "Revue Moderne" reproduce his
exhibited sculptures; for the school decoration, the artist conceives and carries out in fresco a
vast composition, noted by Nicolae Iorga who praised his work and entrusts him on behalf of the
Romanian Academy with an important mission: to make reproductions of the romanian works located in the
museum and castles from Austria, Germany and Switzerland; among others, in the castle Ambras-Tirol,
Vasile Blendea descovers the famous portrait of Vlad the Impaler, which he replicates in excellent
conditions; he also reproduces The Evanghelier (an orthodox missal) of Stefan the Great with its
lections and decorations.
1930-1937
He comes back to the country and retakes his pedagogical activity at the Normal School from
Targoviste; in 1932 varnishes his first personal exhibition having the support of the teacher Ion
Neagoescu and the poet Matei Alexandrescu; Vasile Blendea continues to design monuments, to elaborate
portraits, to spend more and more time doing easel painting in his atelier built in the meantime;
among the paintings in which he captures images of Targoviste sleeping in the shadow of its own
glory, we can mention "Corner of the Eternity street", "Carlova Street", "Outskirts in the winter",
"Engineering shop", "The old fair", "Railway cityscape", "The bell tower of the Royal Court" etc.;
he doesn't neglect the drawing either, "The chopper" and "The girl from Cazaci" dating from this
period; but these are the most creative years for the monumental sculpture as Vasile Blendea
completes the 22th infantry Regiment heroes' monument, the heroes' Monument from Razvadul de Sus
village, the poet Vasile Carlova's bust, the heroes' Monument from Razvadul de Jos village, the
heroes' Monument from Razvadul de Sus village, the heroes' Monument from Voinesti village, the
heroes' Monument from Valea Lunga-Cricov village, the heroes' Monument from Ocnita village, the
compositional bust of the poet Ienachita Vacarescu.
1938
The Official Reception Rooom awards him with the prize "Athanase Simu" for the bust of the engineer
Mario Amico.
1939-1941
He paints "the Entrance of the Royal Court", "The mills pond" and executes in bronze the bust of the
historian Alexandru Stefulescu; mobilized with the reservist lieutenent rank in the 9th Gunners
Regiment.
1924-1952
Discharged of his military duty in 1944 and inspired by the innovative breath and the patriotic
elevation which spread in the whole country liberated from the fascistic slavery, the artist gives the
romanian plastic art a series of oil works named: "Gas workers through snow banks", "John", "Fiddler",
"Historical monument", "Ialomita river in february", "Early spring", "Peasants at fair", "People
from Bratesti", "Ialomita's grove", "The water surface in november", "At the mill", "The street
going towards Valea Voievozilor", "Gas workers from Piersinari", "Uptown", "To Dafu Mill", etc.
and the busts of the engineer Trofin and teacher Vasilescu (made of patinated gypsum), also the
patinated gypsum moulds "The slavery age", "Ion Neculce", "Tudor Vladimirescu's proclamation".
1953-1976
Vasile Blendea becomes a member of the Plastic Artists' Union; he retires on pension and moves to
Bucharest, improvising an atelier on the Petru Maior street; he creates patterns of the monuments
"1907", "Stefan the Great assembling his army", "Matei Basarab", "The Bucharest citadel's
emancipation", "Vlad the Impaler in front of the citadel", "Grivita 1933", "At tilling"; he moves his
atelier to the Udricani street where he has more space and different conditions; he designs the monument
of the flyer Aurel Vlaicu and sculpts Vlad the Impaler and Dan al II-lea's bust, the monuments of Badea
Cartan, Mesterul Manole, Tudor Vladimirescu, Nicolae Iorga and the works "The proclamation of
Pades", "Builders" and "Brotherhood"
1977
The varnishing day of the retrospective exhibition from Dalles, considered an important plastic event
of the year: in the presence oh the art critics, television and a numerous public, the artist -
having now 82 years, from which 50 he dedicated to the romanian art - is warmly congratulated and
praised; his former student, the director Pompiliu Galmeanu from the "Al. Sahia" cinema studio
immortalizes the moment dedicating him a coloured movie; most of the central journals dedicating
him eulogistic chronicles.
1978
... Grateful for the vibrations gifted away during time and for the beauty of the monuments which
he it provided, Targoviste houses with emotion today's retrospective.
1988
In the 8th of April dies the sculptor Vasile Blendea at the age of 93 and it is buried in the Cemetery of the
Viforata Monastery, next to his wife, Emilia.
1994
In July, the Art Musum of Tulcea organizes an ample exhibition of painting, sculpture
and drawing works suggestively named "Close to a centennial".
1995
In December, the art museums of the towns Targovite and Targu-Jiu organize the retrospective
exhibition "Vasile Blendea Centenary" in the halls of the Art Museum of Targoviste.
